Serving Our Neighbor
St. Matthew’s is deeply committed to ministries that serve the most vulnerable in our communities. In an effort to provide the most basic needs such as food, shelter and healthcare to our neighbors, we have partnered with a number of organizations that share our commitment.
Your participation and support for our ministries is always welcome. Contact us at the parish center for more information or learn how to get involved.
The following is a list of Ministries sponsored by St. Matthew’s.
St. Matthew’s Partners with Loaves & Fishes
Dinner is served free of charge in St. Matthew’s Social Hall every Monday – Thursday from 5 – 6 p.m. Anywhere from 125-190 people gather each night. About 50% of the nightly diners are children or seniors.
St. Matthew’s Partners with St. Mary’s Health Clinic
Every Wednesday afternoon, space in St. Matthew’s Parish Center is converted into a clinic that provides free primary health services to the growing number of families without health insurance. The majority of Clinic patients working people from the West Side with jobs that don’t provide health insurance.
St. Matthew’s Partners with Casa Guadalupana
In 2009, St. Matthew’s turned its rectory over to Casa Guadalupana, a Catholic Worker House that helps Latina immigrants, usually single moms with kids. The rectory, which has been renovated with the help of many volunteers, has been converted to provide temporary housing to families who may be experiencing a crisis. Casa also provides a wide range of in-home support to families.
Meals on Wheels
Every Wednesday, volunteers from St. Matthew’s deliver lunches to West Side residents.
Habitat for Humanity
One week every summer, St. Matthew’s volunteers team up with other churches to work on a Habitat House. No experience is needed to be part of the construction team. Those who can’t be part of the crew can help by donating bottled water or other food items for lunches.
Visiting the Homebound
Volunteers pay regular visits to those who can’t leave their home.
