St. Matt's
Class Notes

We would love to hear from you.

Drop us a line with news about yourself or that special memory from your days at St. Matt's. We'll make sure it gets published in the next issue of the newsletter.

  • Agnes Lang Stephaniak '29 retired from teaching at St. Matt's in June 1989. She taught 4th grade from 1970 until her retirement.
  • Bernice Held DeNardo '31 remembers sister Peone in 5th grade. All the kids liked her so much.
  • Marie Haas Ferber '31 was the first female Police Chief in 8th grade. We've come a long way baby!
  • Mary Held Haeg '35 asks us all to remember the excellent discipline we all received from the School Sisters of Notre Dame while at St. Matt's.
  • Catherine Rosenberger '36 was child #11 of 12 who attended St. Matt's. Her older brother Frank started Boy Scout Troup 107 at St. Matt's. Her grandfather helped build St. Matt's church & school after moving from Bavaria in 1882.
  • Thomas Kenney '36 reports from Iowa that he is finally learning the finer points of the game of golf. He states the Sisters of Notre Dame should be canonized for putting up with the Kennys' & Haas'.
  • Carol Suppon Schubring '44 takes the opportunity to see her classmates six times a year with breakfast meetings at the Back Street Grill in St. Paul. Memories of the years at St. Matt's are always the topic at these informal gatherings.
  • Monica Lauen O'Kane '49 has put her St. Matt's education to good use authoring two books: "Living With Adult Children" & "Hey, Mom, I'm Home Again". It sounds like she had a lot of practice with 8 children of her own and 14 grandchildren.
  • Virginia Schmitt Minion '47 moved from St. Paul in 1950. During a visit during 2000, she attended Mass at our "new" church which brought a lot of memories of her years here.

  • Roger Lauen '53 is "Doing great in Washington State". Like his sister Monica '49, he has written a book: "Positive Approaches To Corrections". He doesn't state whether the contents of the book are a reflection of his "positive" experience at St. Matt's.
  • Barbara Lauen Smial '57 will be happy to set any of us up on an island hopping tour of Hawaii. If you're ever in Honolulu, look her up at American Hawaii Cruises.
  • Carol Ann Bruce Monson '59 is retired and moved back to Minnesota in 1995 after 30 years in Washington D.C.
  • Margaret Perron Deeb '68 can be found at the family owned "Roasting Stones" coffee/gifts on University Ave. in St. Paul. Stop in for a cup.
  • Nancy Petschauer Thurber '72 still remembers Mrs. Bates, her all time favorite teacher.
  • Thomas Smith '72 found St. Matthews School to be a real family affair. His grandmother, Anne Hayes '06 and his father Walter Smith '28 were both grads. Tom is a police commander for St. Paul Police and does volunteer motivational speaking for youth groups on the West Side.
  • Bob Pavlak '74 sends his greetings. He enjoys hunting, dogs & "The Lakes" but mostly is staying busy trying to keep up with his 3 kids.
  • Daniel Lopez '82 has 2 girls and 3 boys. In his "spare" time he coaches football, baseball & basketball for West Side Boosters.
  • Rebecca Medellin '84 is currently a Spanish teacher at Cretin-Derham Hall.
  • Sarah Mike '89 is back in St. Paul after living in Switzerland for 10 months. After high school at Cretin-Derham Hall, she graduated from University of Wisc. - LaCrosse.
