Dear
Saint Matthew Community and Visitors:
I
take this opportunity to make a report on the progress
of renovation
undertaken because of the generous gifts and
support of parish families for the Saint Matthew
Capital
Campaign. The Campaign is about to finish phase
one.

We
are in the final months of the three year campaign.
$1,173,281
was pledged to the campaign.
$927,683
has been received.
$719,510
has been spent.
$208,173
is in savings.
$245,600
is yet to be realized from pledges.
$70,000
is currently in bequests being probated.
The
$719,510 was spent for the following improvements:
- Tuckpoint
and restoration of the historic school building
- Windows
and window covering for the historic school building
- Elevator
in the Church
- Handicapped
entrance for the church
- Handicapped
accessible restroom for the church
-
Architectural
services
The
committee will meet to discuss the next phase of
work when funds are available to undertake significant
restoration and/or replacement.
Saint
Matthew Social Hall renovation:
$16,000
has been made available for this work from the last
two parish festivals. The following work has been
done:
- Kitchen
has been painted
- Social
Hall has been painted
- Handicapped
accessible fixtures for restrooms
-
New
lighting for Social Hall
-
Removal
of stage and new tile in stage area
-
New
cupboards for Loaves and Fishes,
-
Rosary
Society Funeral Luncheon supplies
-
New
tables: both banquet tables and 60 inch round
tables
-
To
be done: New sound system and replacement of
side lighting in hall
Representatives
of parish boards and societies have made the decisions
on the social hall. I am grateful to them for their
time and effort. There are pictures in the back of
church which show some of the work of Men's Club
members in the removal of the old stage. A small
portable stage will be purchased and a wireless sound
system, thus flexibility in the use of the hall.
The
work that has been done in the past two years is
remarkable. There is much to yet be done. I am grateful
to all who have given their time and funds so generously
to these efforts, and with the grace of God and the
intercession of Saint Joseph, the builder, we shall
continue and we shall complete this work.
Yours
truly,

Stephen
Adrian, Pastor

CAMPAIGN FIRST PHASE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS!
Dear Saint Matthew Community and Visitors:
Thanks to the generosity of almost 400
households and individuals and community groups, the
Saint Matthews "Building For Today...Visions
For Tomorrow" Campaign is prepared to begin the
first phase of our restoration and renovation project.
On the morning of Tuesday, May 28th,
the Saint Matthews Community Capital Campaign
Transition Team met with John McNamara of Wold Architects
and Engineers to approve the summer scope of work. (SMCCCTT
members: Scott Breimhorst, Ray Burrows, Hugh Cosgrove,
Bob De Nardo, Colleen Erickson, Jim Fennell, Stella
Lundquist, Liz Staples, Marian Wolters, Art Staples,
Stephen Adrian.)
The following items were decided upon:
The bid for window replacement on the
historic building, all the windows except for the 4th
floor windows, was awarded to Val-Pro, Inc. in the amount
of $109,745. This amount does include a $5,000 performance/bid
bond. The windows will be installed prior to August
15th.
Building Restoration Corporation was
awarded the bid to tuck point and wash the exterior
of the Historic School building. The exterior work will
begin on Monday, June 10th and will be completed
before the start of school. The cost of this phase of
the external work is $108,189. I am looking for a donor
or donors who would be willing to pay the $47,000 to
have the tower and cupola done at the same time. If
this can be accomplished we can achieve great savingsonly
one set up, scaffolding, etc.
In the late summer and early fall an
elevator will be installed in Saint Matthews Church,
and the washroom on the main floor will be made handicapped
accessible. This work will be considerably more costly
that first anticipated.
Saint Matthews, like much of the
West Side, is built upon an old quarry. When the mining
of the quarry ceased, the quarry was filled in with
fine sand, debris from the quarry excavation and other
debris gathered from throughout the neighborhood. The
ground is not compact and springs of water flow easily
beneath the surface. In order to accomplish the elevator
project the site will have to be "de-watered".
This process is quite expensive, but necessary, in that
the elevator shaft must rest on bedrock and be free
from water. The elevator project and the desire to make
our restroom on the main floor of the church accessible
to people with disabilities and bringing the exterior
ramp of the church up to code will cost $200,000.
To date $597,903.59 of the total pledged
monies of $1,048,670.14 has been received and deposited.
Thank you for your generous pledges and your payments
of those pledges. The quicker the pledged amounts are
paid the quicker we can do the projects.
If you chose not to make a pledge or
gift during the active parish solicitation, I invite
you now to consider a serious pledge and/or gift to
the parish Capital Campaign.
The summer school project will be completed
in time for the Festival and the All School Reunion
in September.
I am deeply grateful to the donors and
the Transition Team for making this first phase of our
renovation possible at this time.
Yours sincerely,

Stephen Adrian, Pastor
