Sacraments

Confirmation

Confirmation is the sacrament that completes an individual’s initiation into the Catholic Church. Young people in Grades 8, 9, 10, and 11 who would like to be confirmed should register for Faith Formation and attend classes which meet on Wednesdays at 6:45 pm during the school year. Additional requirements for this sacrament are explained at the Confirmation launch Mass and meeting in November, which parents/guardians attend with their students. Students who complete the requirements will be confirmed at a Confirmation Mass held at the Cathedral in the spring.

Parent/Guardian Expectations

Parents/guardians are expected to ensure their students get to all their classes on time, as well as show up for meetings where their own participation is required. Parents/guardians should also support their student’s efforts to fulfill the service requirements for Confirmation.  Additionally, we ask parents/guardians to bring their student to weekend Mass as often as possible to help them become part of our worship community.

Before a Student Can Be Confirmed

Students who want to be Confirmed must have already received the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and First Reconciliation. If your student has not celebrated some or all of these sacraments, please contact Angela Rakow at the parish office.

Confirmation Preparation for Students Attending Catholic Schools

Students who attend Community of Saints or another Catholic school are welcome to participate in our program. To do so, please register at St. Matthew’s Faith Formation. Catholic school students are required to attend class one Wednesday evening each month from October to April. Additional requirements are explained at the Confirmation Launch Mass and meeting held in November, which parents/guardians attend with their Confirmation candidates.
