Sacraments
First Communion
The Eucharist is at the center of who we are as Catholic, Christian people. Students in second grade and older who have been baptized can prepare to receive First Communion. After receiving their First Communion, students are welcome to receive the Eucharist every time they attend Mass.
Youth in Grades 2-8 are prepared through St. Matthew’s Faith Formation program in cooperation with and the support of their parents/guardians. Registration for First Communion is open from August to October. Faith Formation classes are held on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 7:45 PM.
Parent/Guardian Expectations
Parents/guardians are expected to bring their students to the required classes as well as show up for meetings where their own participation is required (about four to six times). We also encourage parents/guardians to bring their student to weekend Masses as often as possible. Doing so helps them become part of our worship community and helps your student feel more confident and ready to receive the Eucharist on their First Communion Day. First Communion is usually celebrated at select weekend Masses following Easter Sunday and before Pentecost.
Baptism Requirement
To receive First Communion, students must be baptized. If your child has NOT been baptized, please contact Angela Rakow as soon as possible to start the baptism preparation process.
First Communion Preparation for Students Attending Catholic Schools
Students who attend Community of Saints or another Catholic school are welcome to participate in our program. To do so, please register at St. Matthew’s Faith Formation. Students accompanied by their parents/guardians will be expected to attend about one meeting per month from November - March. Registration for the current year closes in November.
First Communion for Adults
Adults who would like to receive Communion should contact the Parish Office to discuss preparation.
