Sacraments

First Reconciliation/Penance

Before receiving First Communion, individuals receive the sacrament of First Reconciliation. Also known as “penance” or “confession,” Reconciliation is the sacrament that helps us repair our relationship with God by asking for forgiveness. After First Reconciliation, people can choose to seek reconciliation by meeting individually with a priest, or by attending the Communal Penance services that St. Matthew’s offers during Advent and Lent.

Like First Communion, students in second grade and above can register for First Reconciliation. Students who begin preparation in the fall will make their First Reconciliation at a special ceremony in the winter that their parents/guardians may attend.

Baptism Requirement

To receive First Reconciliation, students must be baptized. If your child has NOT been baptized, please contact Angela Rakow as soon as possible to start the baptism preparation process.

First Reconciliation Prep for Students Attending Catholic Schools

Students who attend Community of Saints or another Catholic school are welcome to participate in our program. To do so, please register at St. Matthew’s Faith Formation. First Reconciliation must be celebrated before a student’s First Communion can be scheduled. November is the deadline to register for the current year.
